Trauma Management Counselling in Kenya

Trauma is like a black cloud that’s always hanging over me. Sometimes it sends a downpour and feels like it’s drowning me, but even when it’s ‘just there in the background’, it is still unnerving and burdens me.

Trauma Management Counselling in Kenya

This is a type of therapy that helps people who have gone through painful or distressing experiences. Its goal is to support individuals in understanding, processing, and healing from the emotional, mental, and sometimes physical effects of trauma. It is counselling that helps someone deal with the shock, fear, sadness, or stress caused by a traumatic event (like an accident, loss, abuse, disaster, or violence). The counsellor provides a safe space, teaches coping skills, and guides the person toward recovery and building resilience.

This is a strong emotional and psychological response to a very distressing or frightening event that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. It happens when someone experiences or witnesses something that feels threatening, shocking, or deeply upsetting, such as accidents, abuse, violence, disasters, or sudden loss. Trauma is the deep hurt or shock that stays in the mind and emotions after going through a painful or scary experience.

  • Acute Trauma - Comes from experiencing a single shocking or dangerous event. Example: a car accident, sudden loss, or natural disaster. The effects are strong but linked to that one event.
  • Chronic Trauma - happens when someone is exposed to repeated and prolonged distressing events over time. Example: ongoing domestic violence, bullying, or long-term abuse. It often leads to deep emotional wounds and stress that builds up.
  • Complex Trauma - involves multiple traumatic events, often starting early in life, usually caused by people close to the survivor. Example: repeated neglect or abuse in childhood. It affects self-esteem, relationships, and sense of safety.

Trauma can be caused by many different painful or frightening experiences that overwhelm a person’s ability to cope. Anything that makes a person feel unsafe, helpless, or deeply scared can cause trauma.  Some common causes include:

  • Accidents and Injuries - such as car crashes, burns, or serious falls.
  • Abuse and Violence - physical, emotional, sexual abuse, domestic violence, or assault.
  • Loss and Grief - sudden death of a loved one, separation, or abandonment.
  • Natural Disasters - floods, earthquakes, fires, or droughts.
  • War and Conflict - exposure to violence, displacement, or being a refugee.
  • Neglect - especially in childhood, when basic needs like love, safety, or care are not met.
  • Bullying and Harassment - repeated mistreatment at school, work, or online.
  • Medical Trauma - painful treatments, surgeries, or serious illnesses.
  • Witnessing Trauma - seeing others harmed, injured, or even witnessing violence.

Unresolved trauma shows up when past pain keeps affecting how a person feels, thinks, and behaves in the present, even long after the event has passed. These are indicators that someone is still struggling with past traumatic experiences:

Emotional Signs

  • Intense fear, sadness, or anger that does not go away
  • Mood swings or sudden emotional outbursts
  • Feeling numb, empty, or disconnected
  • Ongoing guilt, shame, or low self-worth

Mental / Cognitive Signs

  • Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or nightmares
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering things
  • Constant overthinking or feeling “on edge”
  • Negative beliefs about oneself, others, or the world

Physical Signs

  • Trouble sleeping or frequent insomnia
  • Headaches, fatigue, or chronic pain
  • Stomach issues or unexplained health problems
  • Feeling restless or easily startled

Behavioural / Social Signs

  • Withdrawing from family, friends, or social activities
  • Avoiding reminders of the trauma (places, people, situations)
  • Using alcohol, drugs, or risky behaviours to cope
  • Difficulty maintaining relationships or trusting others

Seeking trauma counselling is important because it helps a person heal faster, feel safe again, and prevent the past from controlling their present and future. The following are the importance of seeking trauma counselling:

  • Emotional Healing - Counselling provides a safe space to express painful feelings like fear, anger, guilt, or sadness. This helps reduce emotional burden and prevents bottling up feelings.
  • Prevents Long-Term Problems - trauma is left unresolved, it may lead to depression, anxiety, PTSD, or substance abuse. Early counselling reduces these risks.
  • Healthy Coping Skills - Counsellors teach coping strategies to manage stress, flashbacks, and triggers healthily, instead of harmful behaviours.
  • Restores a Sense of Safety - Trauma often destroys one’s feeling of safety. Counselling helps rebuild trust, confidence, and a sense of control in life.
  • Improves Relationships - Unresolved trauma can affect family and social connections. Therapy helps survivors communicate better and rebuild healthy relationships.
  • Builds Resilience - Counselling empowers survivors to not only heal but also become stronger, improving their ability to handle future challenges.

The role of a counsellor in trauma counselling is to listen, support, guide, and teach coping skills so the client can heal, feel safe again, and regain control of their life. The counsellor will also:

  • Providing a Safe and Supportive Space - The counsellor creates a non-judgmental and confidential environment where the client feels safe to share their experiences and emotions.
  • Helping Clients Process the Trauma - They guide the client to talk through and make sense of their painful experiences at their own pace, without forcing or rushing.
  • Teaching Coping Skills - Counsellors equip clients with healthy tools to manage flashbacks, triggers, anxiety, or stress (e.g., relaxation techniques, grounding exercises).
  • Restoring a Sense of Control and Safety - They help the client rebuild confidence, self-worth, and trust, which trauma often damages.
  • Identifying and Treating Trauma Symptoms - Counsellors recognize signs of PTSD, depression, or anxiety and provide appropriate interventions or referrals if needed.
  • Supporting Personal Growth - They help clients rebuild relationships, set goals, and develop resilience to move forward in life.
